The deal
Champions Group, an Orange County, Calif.-based residential services company, has acquired Lex Cooling, Heating, Plumbing & Electrical, a residential service provider in North Texas. Terms were not disclosed.
Lex was founded in 2004 by Cory and Anthony Contreras. The company will keep its brand and operate under its existing name with added support from Champions.
Champions CEO Frank DiMarco pointed to Lex's operational focus and its care for customers and employees. The founders said Champions' reputation in the industry opens doors for growing the business.
A month after this deal, Blackstone agreed to buy Champions Group itself. That is a reminder that the platform you sell to may change hands too. When you're weighing an offer, ask how long the buyer's investors usually hold, and what happens to your brand, your people and any equity you roll over if the platform is sold.
What this means if you own a multi-trade company
- Your buyer may be sold. Platforms are often resold within a few years. Plan for that before you sign.
- Brand terms matter. Lex keeps its name. If yours matters to you, get it in the agreement.
- Three trades, more options. HVAC, plumbing and electrical under one roof appeals to whole-home buyers.
