The deal
Liberty Service Partners, a residential home services company backed by New York private equity firm NorthCurrent Partners, has partnered with HVAC & Plumbing Unlimited of Lorton, Va. Terms were not disclosed. Liberty said the deal marks its entry into the Mid-Atlantic.
HVAC & Plumbing Unlimited was founded in 2006 and serves residential and commercial customers in Northern Virginia. Founder John Cunningham describes it as a family business built by three generations. The company keeps its name as one of Liberty's partner brands.
Three days later, Liberty announced that second-generation Arctic Breeze Air Conditioning & Heating in Northeast Florida had joined as well, adding to the company's existing Florida brands.
Watch how platforms enter a new region: one well-known local company first, then add-ons around it. Liberty followed this deal with a Northern Virginia plumber in June. If you own a company in a market a platform has just entered, you may soon be the add-on they want. Being early, and being the anchor, usually gets better terms.
What this means if you own an HVAC or plumbing company
- Anchors get better terms. The first company in a new market often has the most leverage.
- Add-ons follow. Once a platform enters your area, expect calls to nearby owners.
- "Partnership" still means a sale. Read the terms. A partnership can mean a full or majority sale.
