The deal
Virginia Green, a lawn care company led by founder and president Gil Grattan, has acquired Bio Turf, a lawn care provider in Northern Virginia. Terms were not disclosed.
Bio Turf customers will be served from Virginia Green's Dulles and Manassas branches with no interruption in service, and gain access to services such as tree and shrub care, aeration and seeding, and mosquito control. Bio Turf's irrigation services will continue to operate independently.
Bio Turf owner Rodney Lansdown will stay involved through a transition period.
Not every deal is a private equity platform. This is a classic tuck-in: a larger local competitor buying a smaller one's customer list and folding it into existing routes. For lawn care owners, the buyer next door can be the most natural fit, because the value is in route density they can capture right away.
What this means if you own a lawn care company
- Your competitor may be your buyer. Local strategic buyers can pay for customers they can serve on existing routes.
- Separate lines can stay separate. Bio Turf's irrigation work runs on its own. Not every piece has to be merged.
- Transition matters. Owners often stay for a period to hand off customers and relationships.
