The deal
Champions Group, an Orange County, Calif.-based platform of residential heating, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical companies, has acquired Powell Electric, a residential electrical service provider in Southern California. Terms were not disclosed.
Powell Electric was founded in 1971. Jason Powell remains its president and general manager, and the company keeps its name and brand, now with Champions' resources behind it. Champions CEO Frank DiMarco said the group plans to invest in Powell's people and processes.
Earlier this year, Champions announced an agreement to be acquired by funds managed by Blackstone, which makes it one of the most closely watched buyers in the industry.
Electrical is the trade platforms most often want to add next, because licensed electricians are scarce and electrical work (panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators) keeps growing. A 55-year-old company with a respected name in a big metro is exactly the kind of anchor a national buyer looks for. If you run a residential electrical shop, your license count and service-call mix are worth measuring now.
What this means if you own a residential electrical company
- Electrical is in demand. Multi-trade platforms are actively looking to add electrical to HVAC and plumbing.
- Big metros attract big buyers. Large platforms prefer established brands in high-demand markets.
- Your president role can continue. Many platforms want the owner to keep leading. Decide what role you want before talks start.
