The deal

Investment firm KKR has reached an agreement to acquire A1 Garage Door Service, Reuters reported on Sept. 2, citing people familiar with the matter. The reported value is about $2 billion. Neither KKR nor A1's current backer, Cortec Group, commented, and the companies had not formally announced a deal at the time of the report.

Phoenix-based A1 was founded in 2007 by Tommy Mello, who remains CEO. The company repairs and replaces residential garage doors and operates in about 20 states. Cortec has backed the business since 2022.

The deal would extend KKR's existing bets on home services, which include franchisor Neighborly and foundation-repair company Groundworks. It also follows another large garage-door transaction earlier this year, when Oak Hill Capital bought Guild Garage Group for more than $800 million.

The V2 take

Big headline numbers like this are a signal, not a benchmark. A national platform with a recognizable brand trades at a very different multiple than a single-market operator. What it does tell you: the largest investors in the world see residential repair work as steady, cash-generating business worth paying up for. That interest flows downhill to smaller sellers as platforms look for add-ons to keep growing.

What this means if you own a garage door company

  • Repair revenue is prized. Buyers like steady, need-driven repair calls. Know what share of your revenue comes from repair versus new installs.
  • Your market may be on a platform's map. National brands often enter new cities by buying a local operator rather than starting from zero.
  • Don't anchor on headline prices. Your value depends on your size, margins and growth. Get a real valuation before you set expectations.
